The Scroll Of Truth
Reviewed format guide
Widely recognizable template for a hidden or denied truth gets stated too plainly to ignore.
Why this format lasts
Originally from a webcomic by Chito, a crusader finds an ancient scroll containing absolute truth, reads it, and hurls it away in disgust. It thrives on violent rejection of inconvenient facts.
How the format works
set up the mistaken read, then reveal the sharper real read
When to use it
- a specific social situation where the visual expression carries the joke
How a brand uses this
Drop this when you want to call out an uncomfortable truth your buyers actively avoid hearing. It works best for bitter pills: code debt, ignored documentation, or the reality that no one is reading that forty-page marketing whitepaper. The immediate discard of the scroll is pure workplace denial.
Steal these starting points:
- surface read: the five-year roadmap will be obsolete by next wednesday / real read: nyehhh
- surface read: your users do not want a community they want working exports / real read: nyehhh
- surface read: nobody read the deck you spent all weekend polishing / real read: nyehhh
When NOT to use it
- When the joke is just a recap; the format needs a stance or turn
- Using the template as two headline labels instead of creating the native comic turn
Example captions
- turn the fact into behavior, cope, reversal, or status mismatch
- Surface read: doing it the old way / Real read: the obviously better way
- Surface read: what we planned / Real read: what shipped
